Further guidelines for oral and poster presentations will be available once abstracts have been accepted and the program is finalised.

Abstract Preparation

Abstract submissions should conform to the following guidelines:

  • Abstract Length & Format: Abstracts should be submitted as a Word document (.doc or .docx format). The entire abstract must fit on one single A4 page with Arial 11pt font (text justified) and 'Narrow' margins (1.27cm Top, bottom, left & right).
  • Title: should be in bold and in grammatical English. Avoid abbreviations that are specific to a narrow field. Only capitalise the first letter of the first word and any proper nouns (do not use capital letters for the full title).
  • Author Names: Insert one blank line after the Title and then list author(s) name(s) in full (First name, initial and Last name). The name of the presenting author should be underlined and listed first (do not list authors by initials only).
  • Add superscripted numbers immediately after each last name to note the person's institution affiliation(s) (not required if all authors are from the same institution). For free communication abstracts, where no author is a Society member there must be an Introducing Member who will be identified in parentheses immediately following the institutional affiliations i.e. (Introduced by ......).
  • Institutional affiliations: Insert one blank line after the author names and then list institution information for each author(s), ordered according to the author list, on separate lines, with no blank lines in-between. The address(es) should identify where the work was done but may indicate other institutional affiliations. Include Centre, Institute, Department and/or School name, Institution name, City, State and Country. Do not include street addresses or post codes.
  • For multiple institutions, begin each institution affiliation line with a superscripted number that corresponds with the superscripted numbers that follow each author's surname (not required if all authors are from the same institution).
  • Body of Abstract: Insert one blank line after the institution names and add the bolded headings, Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusion, with one blank line in between each section.
  • Introduction: must contain a brief background/rationale/aim for the work.
  • Methods: provide brief details of the experimental model(s) [e.g. humans, animals (incl. sexes), cells] and main methods of analysis. For human and animal studies, a statement must be included that all experiment procedures were approved by a human or animal research ethics committee.
Also, for all Animal Experiments, AuPS Domestic rule 11(5) states that "All abstracts that deal with animal experimentation in vivo must include the names, doses and modes of administration of all anaesthetic, tranquilizing and muscle relaxant drugs employed". Additionally, if tissues/cells are removed from animals for in vitro experiments (e.g. primary cell culture or organ bath experimets), it must be stated whether the tissue/cells were removed from anaesthetised or dead animals.
  • Results: clearly describe the main results. Statements, such as "the results will be discussed", are unacceptable.
  • Conclusions: give a conclusion/summary statement of the data.
  • The text should not make reference to the talk or poster that will be given. If abbreviations are used, they must be defined at first appearance. S.I. units should be used. Latin and other non-English words should appear in Italics.
  • Figures & Tables: should be restricted to one of each and must be referenced in the body of the abstract.
  • Citations & References: Citations can be included in the abstract as a number in square brackets (e.g. [1], [2], [3] etc...) and details listed under the bolded heading, References. References should be listed in the order they are cited in the text and include the first author's surname (followed by et al. if multiple authors), year of publication, (optional: title of article), abbreviated journal name using the standard PubMed form in Italics, volume number, and first and last pages of the article. For a book, include the title, editor, edition if applicable, specific page numbers, city of publication & publisher. e.g. 1. Lowry et al. (1951) Protein measurement with the Folin phenol reagent. J Biol Chem. 196:265-275.
